The JM House joins two beachfront lots in the Maravilla Complex of San José del Cabo, Mexico. Having an estate of these dimensions, the project is conceived as a series of courtyards, patios, and gardens all connected through the architectural program and porticoes. These open spaces are each given a particular character. In studying historical buildings such as the Alhambra in Spain, our main approach was to create a multiexperience complex. Due to the vast program required by the clients, nodes or groups of buildings were created as units independent from one another but connected through the patios and porticoes.
The main house and social spaces are located towards the oceanfront, while the guest quarters and all services are located around a central courtyard that serves as the heart of the project. Materials are meant to be neutral in tonality so the natural vegetation and water features can be the principal distinction of the complex, mixing architecture with lattices and traditional techniques to tie this project to its Mexican heritage.
